Ever come across a wine that feels a little more personal, a little more interesting? That’s what single barrel wines are all about.
We have been exploring what happens when we zero in on the smallest possible expression of our wines and are excited to share two brand new releases from our Las Brisas Vineyard that each tell a unique story. One Chardonnay and one Pinot Noir, both from a single French oak barrel made by the legendary Tonnellerie Tremeaux (read our blog about this legendary cooperage here).
What Is a Single Barrel Wine?
Most wines are blended from several barrels to create a consistent flavor profile. But single barrel wines are exactly what they sound like. They are crafted from just one, carefully chosen barrel, which lets us highlight subtle differences you might not get in a blend: a touch more spice here, a silkier texture there, a lift in aromatics. It’s like taking a closer look at just one scene in a story, and focusing on exactly what can be brought to a wine.
Each barrel has its own character, especially when it comes from a cooperage as respected as Tonnellerie Tremeaux, based in Burgundy, France. These hand-crafted barrels influence how the wine develops, from texture to flavor. The oak, the toast level, even how the staves are bent, it all plays a role. When you taste a single barrel wine, you’re tasting that exact journey.
The Wines
2024 Chardonnay Las Brisas Single Barrel
Bright, elegant, and full of texture, this wine is a fresh take on Carneros Chardonnay. The light toast on the Tremeaux barrel lends just the right amount of structure and spice, while allowing the fruit to shine. It enhances the flavors of pineapple, pear, and crisp apple balanced with rich shortbread aromas.
2023 Pinot Noir Las Brisas Single Barrel
A single-barrel Pinot is a rare treat, and only our second release. This one is silky, layered, and full of character. Aromas of cherry and black tea lead into flavors of strawberry and raspberry, and a gentle oak influence. It’s a snapshot of the vineyard, the barrel, and the vintage, all wrapped into one bottle.
Why Try It?
Trying a single barrel wine is like getting a behind-the-scenes look at how wine is made. It’s fun, surprising, and often a little more adventurous. For us, it’s a way to share something small-scale and special, creating just a few cases from our cellar, made with intention.
