About: In 1999 Francis and Kathy Mahoney went to visit family in Italy and returned to Napa inspired by the coastal varietals. In 2000 they planted an acre of Vermentino at our Las Brisas Vineyard and the cool, breezy climate of southern Carneros proved to be perfect for this varietal.
Tasting Notes: Bright, clean expressions of grapefruit, citrus and peach, with a hint of minerality, and tangy and refreshing palate.
Winemaking: Fermented in both neutral French oak (15%) and Stainless barrels for 6 months. Our first pick of Vermentino went into our stainless barrels, as we always do with Vermentino to preserve the freshness and acidity in the fruit. This vintage, we also chose to have our second pick of Vermentino fermented in barrel. It was our first time making Vermentino this way, and found it gave the wine a better mouthfeel and more forward fruit. It was also fermented on two different yeasts for added complexity to the wine. To preserve acidity we do not allow malolactic fermentation to occur.
